2022, exhibition catalogue / artist book
'The Bigger the Short, Sweeter the Bottom' is an artist book of William Ludwig Lutgens, published by Stockmans Art Books in 2022, for the eponymous exhibition at De Garage in Mechelen.
The book functions both as an exhibition catalogue and an artist book with its considered design and its idiosyncratic structure. Reproductions of artworks and installation views from the period 2019 until 2022 are combined in a radical way with drawings from sketchbooks and video stills from the artist's studio. Full bleed photographs of installations are interspersed with high resolution reproductions of paintings and sculptures.
The coloured pattern on the spine is visible on the open binding, it is a direct reference to the striped dress shirts and wallpaper in the 'The Bigger the Short, Sweeter the Bottom' exhibition. In contrast to the image heavy spreads, the text pages offer a lot of white space. The layout of the short texts by Wouter Poolman, which run throughout the entire book, remind us of a classic novel. The cover was printing in a white offset ink on pragmatical gray cardboard, which forms tactile connection with the recycled hand made paper William Ludwig Lugens developed for his recent paintings. A double index printed in a subtle purple gathers all artworks both in a chronological manner as well as based on their position in the publication.
